Description

Established in the 1970s, the Abu Nidal Organization (ANO) is an international terrorist organization founded by Sabri al-Banna (a.k.a. Abu Nidal). The main goal of the ANO is the destruction of Israel and the creation of an independent Palestinian state. The ANO has utilized many methods to further its cause, including bombings, hijackings, assassinations and armed attacks against civilians. In total, it has carried out over 90 terrorist attacks in 20 countries, killing approximately 300 people and wounding hundreds more.

Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG)

Description

Founded in the early 1990s, the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) is a militant organization based in the southern Philippines. It seeks a separate Islamic state in Mindanao for the country's Muslim minority. ASG activities include bombings, assassinations, kidnappings, and extorting from companies and wealthy businessmen. Its targets are primarily security forces, foreign priests and religious figures, and Christian populations. ASG ideology is not solely predicated on demands for regional autonomy; it also espouses many of the broad objectives of Al Qaida.

Al Jihad (AJ)

Description

Al Jihad (AJ) was formed in the late 1970s in Egypt as a violent offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. Its objectives are to overthrow the Egyptian Government and replace it with an Islamic state, and to attack United States and Israeli interests in Egypt and abroad. AJ tactics have historically been targeted at high-level Egyptian government officials, as well as at US and Israeli interests in Egypt and abroad. AJ activities have included the assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in 1981, involvement in an Egyptian Embassy bombing in Islamabad in 1995, and the two 1998 United States Embassy bombings in Africa. The group has links with Osama bin Laden, Al Qaida, and the Vanguards of Conquest, and is a signatory to the 1998 fatwa (religious decree) against the United States and Israel.

Al Qaida

Description

Founded in the 1980s, Al Qaida is the central component of a network of Sunni extremist groups. It functions as an umbrella organization with branches in the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia. Al Qaida is committed to overthrowing secular governments in Islamic countries and using force to eliminate all Western influences in these countries. Al Qaida activities include, but are not limited to, suicide attacks, simultaneous bombings, kidnappings, and hijackings. The Al Qaida network has been directly or indirectly associated with the 1998 bombings of two United States embassies, and the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole. It was directly involved in the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks of September 11, 2001.

Description

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade (AAMB) is an armed Palestinian group associated with the Fatah organization. It emerged following the Palestinian-Israeli clashes in September 2000. AAMB objectives include the removal of the Israeli military and settlers from the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jerusalem, and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state. The AAMB conducts armed attacks, bombings, and suicide bombings to achieve its objectives.

Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya (AGAI)

Description

Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya (AGAI) is a militant Egyptian movement that strives to overthrow the current Egyptian government, through force, and replace it with an Islamic state. The AGAI specializes in armed attacks against government and security officials, Western tourists and any others believed to be opponents of an Islamic state in Egypt. In 2006, the group announced its merger with Al Qaida. The group is a signatory to the 1998 Fatwa (religious decree) against the United States and Israel.

Al-Ittihad Al-Islam (AIAI)

Description

Al-Ittihad Al-Islam (AIAI) is an Islamic organization that engages in terrorism in Somalia and Ethiopia. Guided by the goal of creating a theocracy based on Islamic law, the AIAI seeks to unify all Muslims in the region under the banner of creating a 'greater Somalia'. To achieve this objective, the AIAI is committed to using indiscriminate terror tactics, including the targeting of foreigners and political leaders of foreign states. The AIAI is believed to have operational links with Al Qaida.

Ansar al-Islam (AI) is a radical Sunni para-military group composed of Iraqi Kurds, Arabs and others. The group was established in September 2001 as a result of the merger of several Kurdish Sunni groups. It follows the same extremist interpretation of Islam as Al Qaida. AI activities include kidnappings, murders, and armed attacks.

The Armed Islamic Group (GIA) is a radical Sunni group based in Algeria. The GIA's primary objective is to overthrow the Algerian government and replace it with an Islamic state. The group employs a variety of methods and tactics in its attacks, including bombings, shootings, hijackings and kidnappings. The GIA is known to have targeted intellectuals, journalists and foreigners, both within and outside of Algeria. The group has links with terrorist organizations throughout the Middle East and Central/Southern Asia, including Al Qaida.

Asbat Al-Ansar is a Lebanon-based Sunni extremist group composed primarily of Palestinians with links to Al Qaida and other Sunni extremist groups. The group's goals include eliminating perceived anti-Islamic and pro-Western influences in Lebanon and establishing a radical Islamic regime in the country. Asbat Al-Ansar activities include armed attacks against Lebanese and Western government officials, bombing public and religious places, and killing senior members of rival groups.

Aum Shinrikyo

Description

Aum Shinrikyo / Aleph is a religious organization founded in Japan in 1987. The sect's beliefs are based on a selection of principles from Tibetan Buddhism, apocalyptic aspects of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction, the Zen masters, Isaac Asimov's science fiction, and the Judeo-Christian concept of Armageddon. The sect's primary objective is to catalyze a nuclear Armageddon. Aum Shinrikyo / Aleph is responsible for the 12 deaths and the hospitalization of over 5,000 persons resulting from a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system on March 20, 1995. It has also been accused of detaining members against their will, extortion, kidnapping members who decided to leave, and murdering members who refused to turn over all their possessions or to return to the sect.

Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC)

Description

The Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC) is a right-wing terrorist organization in Colombia which acts as an umbrella organization for like-minded paramilitary groups. Guided by its objective of countering the influence and activity of left-wing guerrilla organizations, the AUC has come into conflict with rival terrorist groups from the National Liberation Army (ELN) and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The AUC is closely linked to the drug trade as the revenue from illegal narcotics smuggling is integral to its operations. In order to achieve its goals, the AUC has employed a variety of tactics, including assassinations, intimidation, torture, and kidnapping.

Babbar Khalsa (BK) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI)

Description

Babbar Khalsa (BK) and Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) are entities of a Sikh organization that aims to establish an independent Sikh state called Khalistan (Land of the Pure) in the area that is presently the Indian state of Punjab. BK and BKI continue to be among the most powerful militant Sikh groups. Ideologically, members of BK and BKI follow in the path of their historical namesake Babbar Akalis, and vow to avenge the deaths of Sikhs killed in defense of the faith. BK and BKI activities include armed attacks, kidnapping, assassination and bombings.

Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN)

Description

The Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN), founded in 1964, is the second-largest leftist rebel group in Colombia after the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The ELN's principal aim is to 'seize power for the people' and establish a revolutionary government. The group believes foreign involvement in Colombia's oil industry violates the country's sovereignty and foreign companies are unfairly exploiting Colombia's natural resources. ELN activities include kidnapping, hijacking, bombing, extortion and guerrilla warfare. The ELN targets many of its attacks at the Colombian oil industry. While its activities have been limited to Colombia, it has acted against Canadian interests by kidnapping a Canadian employee of Occidental Petroleum and attempting to assassinate the Canadian manager of a Texas oil company in Bogota. ELN has close ties with the FARC. Both ELN and FARC are members of the Simon Bolivar Guerrilla Coordination Board.

Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA)

Description

The Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA) was formed in 1959 and is headquartered in the Basque provinces of Spain and France. It has been responsible for attacks on Spanish and French interests domestically and abroad. ETA is the most powerful of the Basque terrorist groups, with the stated objective of creating an independent Basque state that would contain the six Basque provinces of Spain and France, as well as the Navarra province of Spain. ETA activities include bombings, assassinations and kidnappings. The ETA is said to have killed over 800 people and carried out some 1,600 terrorist attacks since its formation.

Established in the 1960s, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) is Colombia's oldest, largest, and best-equipped leftist insurgency group. FARC is guided by its goal of overthrowing the current government in Colombia and replacing it with a leftist, anti-American regime that would force all United States interests out of Colombia and Latin America. FARC activities include bombings, hijackings, assassinations and the kidnapping of Colombian officials and Westerners. Both FARC and Ejército de Liberación Nacional are members of the Simon Bolivar Guerrilla Coordination Board.

Description

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, leader of the group Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin (HIG), espouses an extreme Islamic anti-Western ideology with the objective of overthrowing the Afghani administration, eliminating all Western influence in Afghanistan, and creating an Islamic state. In late 2002, Hekmatyar joined forces with Al Qaida and the Taliban to form an anti-Western, anti-Afghan government alliance. Since 2002, Hekmatyar has reportedly established a base, recruited new members and initiated mobile training camps with Al Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan, with the goal of carrying out terrorist activities in Afghanistan.

Hamas (Harakat Al-Muqawama Al-Islamiya) ("Islamic Resistance Movement")

Description

Hamas, the Arabic acronym for the group Harakat Al-Muqawama Al-Islamiya, which also means "Zeal", is a radical Sunni terrorist organization that developed from the Palestinian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1987. It uses political and violent means to pursue the goal of establishing an Islamic Palestinian state in Israel. Since 1990, Hamas has been responsible for several hundred terrorist attacks against both civilian and military targets. Hamas has been one of the primary groups involved in suicide bombings aimed at Israelis in the course of the intifada that started in September 2000.

Harakat ul-Mujahidin (HuM) is a Pakistan-based radical Kashmiri Islamic organization seeking Pakistani rule for the Indian territory of Kashmir, in addition to calling for a war against America and India. To achieve these objectives, the HuM employs various methods that include hijacking, kidnapping and executing foreigners and Indian government officials. The group has links with Al Qaida, and is also a signatory to the Al Qaida issued 1998 fatwa (religious decree) against the United States and Israel.

Description

Hizballah, meaning "Party of God", is a radical Islamic terrorist organization based in Lebanon. The objectives of Hizballah, as derived from its February 16, 1985 political manifesto, include removing all Western influences from Lebanon and from the Middle East, as well as destroying the state of Israel and liberating all Palestinian territories and Jerusalem from what it sees as Israeli occupation. It rejects the possibility of a negotiated peace. Hizballah operates principally in Lebanon, but has also been active in Europe, North and South America, and Africa. Hizballah has been responsible for car bombings, hijackings, and kidnappings of Western and Israeli/Jewish targets in Israel, Western Europe and South America.

International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF)

Description

The International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) was founded in 1984 in the United Kingdom as an international branch of the All India Sikh Students' Federation (AISSF) with centres in several countries, including Canada. The ISYF is a Sikh organization whose aim is to promote Sikh philosophy and the establishment of an independent Sikh nation called Khalistan. Since 1984, its members have been engaged in terrorist attacks, assassinations and bombings primarily against Indian political figures, but also against moderate members of the Sikh community. The ISYF collaborates and/or associates with a number of Sikh terrorist organizations, including Babbar Khalsa (BK).

Islamic Army of Aden (IAA)

Description

The Islamic Army of Aden (IAA) is a Yemen-based organization advocating the overthrow of the Yemeni government and the creation of an Islamist theocracy. Combating Western influences not only in Yemen but also within the Islamic world, the IAA opposes the use of Yemeni ports and bases by the United States and other Western countries. It has called for the expulsion of Western forces from the Gulf of Aden. Guided by these goals, the IAA has used violent tactics in order to achieve its objectives, including the 2000 attack on the American navy destroyer USS Cole, and the targeting of foreigners and political representatives of foreign states. The IAA has links with other terrorist groups, including Al Qaida.

Description

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) is a terrorist organization whose primary goal is to overthrow the government of Uzbekistan. The IMU has employed kidnapping, armed attacks against government installations, cross-border incursions, and coordinated efforts with other terrorist groups, such as Al Qaida. The IMU has attacked Westerners and declared its intention to strike at Western interests in Central Asia.

The Jemaah Islamiyyah (JI) is a terrorist organization dedicated to the establishment of an Islamic state in Southeast Asia incorporating Indonesia, Malaysia, the southern Philippines, Singapore and Brunei. Since its inception, the JI has been responsible for a series of bank robberies, hijackings and bombings of civilian targets. The JI has emerged as the most extensive transnational radical Islamic group in Southeast Asia. The JI has established links with Al Qaida.

Description

The Kahane Chai (Kach) is a right-wing, anti-Arab, terrorist group whose overall aim is to restore the biblical state of Israel by expanding the borders of Israel to include the occupied territories and parts of Jordan. To this end, the group intimidates and threatens Palestinians and mounts sustained political pressure on the Israeli government. Its activities include armed violence, bombing, disturbing public speeches, engaging in physical confrontations with law enforcement officials, and threatening Israeli government officials. Kach is known to have links both to other members of the "Kahanist Movement" and to other Jewish extremist splinter groups.

Founded in Turkey in 1974 by Abdullah Ocalan, the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK / KADEK) is a Kurdish political party whose main goal is the creation of an independent Kurdish state in southeast Turkey and in northern Iraq, a region that is part of the traditional territory of the Kurdish people. To arrive at this goal, the PKK / KADEK has led a campaign of guerrilla warfare and terrorism, especially in Turkey and in northern Iraq. Their activities include attacking the Turkish military, diplomats and Turkish businesses at home and in some western European cities. They have also been known to bomb resorts and kidnap tourists in an attempt to destabilize tourism in Turkey.

Description

Founded in the late 1990s, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) is a Sunni organization based in Pakistan. The LJ's goal is to transform Pakistan into a Sunni state. The LJ's terrorist acts, including bombings and assassinations, have traditionally targeted individuals or groups of the Shiite Islamic community in Pakistan. Since September 11th 2001, members of the LJ have also been involved in attacks against Christians and foreigners in Pakistan. This group has links with the Taliban and Al Qaida.

Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) (Army of the Pure), is a Pakistan-based, radical organization established in the late 1980s operating in the Indian states of Kashmir and Jammu. The LeT's objective is to end India's rule of Kashmir and Jammu. The LeT's activities include suicide bombings and armed attacks on civilians, government officials, and the Indian security forces. In addition to having links with Al Qaida, the LeT has links with the Taliban and other Islamic extremist groups throughout the Middle East, Chechnya, and the Philippines.

Founded in the 1980s, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a Sri Lankan-based terrorist organization that seeks the creation of an independent homeland in the north and northeastern part of Sri Lanka, a region it has called "Tamil Eelam". Its war against the government of Sri Lanka has been fought on three fronts: a political campaign, guerrilla warfare, and a terrorist campaign. The LTTE uses a variety of terror tactics in order to achieve its objectives, including armed attacks on political, economic, religious and cultural targets. The LTTE's campaign has included plans to create Tamil-only northern and eastern provinces, and to this end it has violently expelled non-Tamils from these regions. The LTTE also endeavours to eliminate moderate Tamils and other Tamil militant groups that compete with it for influence and power within the Sri Lankan Tamil community.

Description

Formed in the 1960s, the Mujahedin-e-Khalq(MEK) is an Iranian terrorist organization that is currently based in Iraq. MEK's principal objective is the overthrow of the existing Iranian regime. Its aim is to install a new government under the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a political coalition of Iranian opposition groups affiliated with MEK. To achieve their objectives, the MEK has used physical force, including armed attacks. The group has or had affiliations with Saddam Hussein, Amal, the Kurdish Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI), the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Al Fatah, and other Palestinian factions.

The Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) is a small, armed splinter group allied to the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). Its objective is the destruction of the state of Israel and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. First founded in 1961 by Ahmad Jibril, the group operates primarily in Europe, Israel, Lebanon and other areas in the Middle East. During its most active period, it is known to have conducted several high-profile attacks, including the October 1985 hijacking of the Italian cruise ship, Achille Lauro.

  2. Do u want to add a few links, or a detailed study on this Blog about the struggle. This Blog is against terrorism. Not to hurt people who are fighting against it. The list of Terrorists Groups you are seeing is from the Canadian gov website.
